Notes:

When Dav Pilkey was a kid, there was a cool TV show on every Saturday called "Super Host". It featured a bumbling, red-nosed guy dressed in a baggy "Superman" outfit, who would do silly skits and show old monster movies all afternoon. Dav usually watched Super Host every Saturday, and his favorite thing was when "Supe" showed old Japanese monster movies.

"I loved seeing the giant monsters crashing through cities, with all the little people below running and screaming. It always looked kinda fake, but I loved it anyway. Now that I'm older, I collect those movies and I still enjoy watching them." — Dav Pilkey

Dav wanted to create a series of children's books based on the "Giant Monster" theme, so he wrote a book called "Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot". He made several sketches of the main characters, and the new series was accepted at Scholastic. The books started coming out in the year 2000, with illustrations by an artist who used bold, black and white cartoons. By 2005, there were seven books in the series. Then the series ended.

"In 2012, I met a kid in Canada who was a big fan of Ricky Ricotta. He'd been waiting in line for an autograph, and he refused to leave until I promised him that I would write more Ricky Ricotta books. I tried to be vague, but he wouldn't accept it. He was steadfast. He made me look him in the eye and PROMISE to write more. So I did.

Shortly thereafter, I approached my editor, Anamika Bhatnagar, with the idea of writing more new books for the series. Together we (along with my agent and the President of Scholastic) decided to not only create more books, but to totally update the previous books with all new, full color illustrations. When Anamika asked me who I wanted to revamp the artwork, I had only one person in mind: Dan Santat.

I'd been a big fan of Dan Santat ever since I read his books Sidekicks and Oh NO!: or How My Science Project Destroyed the World (written my Mac Barnett). I was very fortunate when Dan agreed to illustrate the entire series. We even got to work together on new scenes for each book, featuring very cool comic-book-styled sections.

In the end, I was able to keep my promise to my Ricky Ricotta fan in Canada. I just finished writing books #8 and #9, and I've got four more stories in the works." Dav Pilkey

Fun Facts:

1. Dav's favorite monster movie of all time is Godzilla Vs. Megalon. This film is often considered to be the worst Godzilla movie of all time, but Dav loves it. Jet Jaguar RULES!!!

2. The potion that Dr. Stinky uses to turn the classroom lizard into a monster is called Hate Potion #9. This is a silly take-off of an old rock song called "Love Potion #9" made popular by The Clovers.

3. This book was originally published as Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot. We stopped using the word "Giant" in the year 2002 after many young fans pointed out that the Robot really isn't a 'giant'. He's just 12 times taller than a mouse, so he's really only about two-and-a-half feet tall. Many young readers suggested the adjective "Mighty" instead, so after careful consideration, we changed the title on all the books. We like to keep our readers happy!
